Walking Through Grief as an Teen & Adult

Grief changes us. It slows time, blurs days, and turns the simplest moments into reminders of what we’ve lost. Whether it’s the death of a parent, a child, a partner, or a close friend, grief can feel like you’re navigating a storm without a map — and some days, without an anchor.

As an attorney, I often sit with families during their hardest moments. But as a human, I’ve walked through seasons of loss myself, and I know that no matter how prepared you think you are, nothing can truly ready your heart for goodbye. There’s no “right way” to grieve, and healing doesn’t happen on a timeline, no matter how much we wish it would.

It’s easy to feel like you should “be okay” by now, or that others are grieving “better” than you, but the truth is, grief looks different for everyone. It can show up in waves of tears, in moments of laughter, in numb days where everything feels heavy. It can feel like forgetting, remembering, hurting, and healing — all at once.

If you’re in that place right now, I want you to know: you’re not alone, and it’s okay to take your time. It’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to seek out small steps toward comfort and gentle practices that help you breathe again, even when the grief feels like it’s pressing on your chest.

Today, I’m sharing some gentle, practical ways you can support yourself during grief, along with book recommendations that have brought comfort to many walking this path. My hope is that you find something here that helps you feel seen, supported, and reminded that you are allowed to take your grief one moment at a time.

Allow Yourself to Feel

Grief can bring waves of sadness, anger, confusion, and even relief. All these feelings are valid.

Find Community

Talking with others who have experienced loss can remind you that you are not alone.

Care for Your Body

Grief can impact your physical health. Try to eat, rest, and move your body, even gently.

Create Rituals of Remembrance

Lighting a candle, sharing stories, or visiting a special place can help you honor your loved one while processing your grief.
